History of Mardi Gras March 3, 1699 - The first American Mardi Gras celebration was near modern day New Orleans and is considered the last opportunity for merrymaking and indulgence in our wonderful food and drinks before the start of Lent for the large population of Roman Catholics in New Orleans. Do you know what the colors of Mardi Gras stand for? The colors of Carnival were chosen in 1872 by the Krewe of Rex, "King of Carnival". Twenty years later, for the 1892 parade, Rex declared that the colors had meaning: Purple - for Justice Green - for Faith Gold - for Power In 1875, Governor Warmoth of Louisiana signs the "Mardi Gras Act" making it a legal holiday in Louisiana, which it still is. Rex is credited for creating the Mardi Gras flag and song.
